Frigates

From EVEWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

A frigate is a small type of spacecraft that is very fast and agile, primarily notable for being used by new players for their first week to month of play. Combat frigates are capable of completing combat missions for Level I agents and are often used for all levels of courier missions, due to their speed. Frigates cost in the hundreds of thousands of ISK and are usually only able to fit small-class modules.

In fleet warfare, frigates are usually scouts or tackler, and in large groups (10 or more), they are sometimes used for hit-and-run skirmish warfare. A well-fitted frigate that is piloted by an experienced captain may be able to destroy a cruiser, but this is extremely dangerous. The frigate's bane are destroyers and cruisers that are fitted to destroy frigates, although any ship with a decent drone compliment can threaten a frigate.

Each faction has developed and designed its own types of frigate-class spacecrafts that correspond to each faction's strengths and mindsets, but they have all been designed to fill one or two of a static set of roles.

Faction Frigate

  • Mining: a non-fighting spacecraft designed to extract ore from asteroids in safe areas. Has up to 200% bonus to mining efficiency and 125% bonus to cargo hold size.
  • Astrometrics: these spacecraft have a bonus to Scan Probe Launchers, very large cargo holds, and very high amounts of CPU capacity. They can also be used for light cargo hauling or tractor-beams if not used for exploration.
  • Electronic Warfare: designed to nullify the enemy's combat capabilities. Each race focuses on a different type of EWAR with some sort of effectiveness bonus. They also tend to have a decent number of mid-slots and CPU, giving them the ability to support any type of EWAR, not just their racial type.
  • Courier / Tackler: Tech 1 Cousins to the Interceptors. Very fast ships that can either be used for travel around quickly (to pick-up cargo and what-have-you), or use their speed to tackle enemy ships. The lack of mids mitigate the extent to which they can Tackle, however.
  • Combat: Purely fighting ships, designed to deal and sustain damage. There are three types of combat frigates.
    • Missile frigates, with excellent bonuses to a specific damage-type of light missile, while lacking some mid and low powerslots. (Gallente arguably lacks this sub-variant, the closest thing being the Tristan.)
    • Gun frigates, with good speed, many turret hardpoints, and bonuses to turret damage and/or turret tracking. (Caldari arguably lacks this sub-variant, the closest thing being the Merlin.)
    • Defensive frigates, with a bit more armor or shields of other frigates. (Usually meshes with the Gun frigate. Minmatar arguably lack this variant, the closest thing being the Rifter.)
