The maelstrom can adapt to a variety of roles: sniping, tanking, and even a decent drone ship, although not nearly as good a drone ship as any Gallente battleship.
Its shield boost bonus gives it a huge advantage when active tanking, adding 37.5% to the shield boost with Minmatar battleship 5. It is tied with the Abaddon for highest powergrid, and it has a plenty of medium and low slots, allowing it to effectively tank shields and fit several damage mods at once.
An excellent ship for leading a battleship group, or supporting capital ships.
