The Orca is here!
What is the role of the Orca?
The Orca is a collaboration between Outer Ring Excavations and Deep Core Mining Inc. Designed as a "sub capital" logistical ship with a mining command focus, it is ideal for the day to day needs of corporations or individuals. It is perhaps a stepping stone towards capital ships, filling a void between the regular and capital class ships making it more affordable with a wider range of use in all areas of space as it can use stargates and does not have a jump drive.
Joint venture
The Orca was developed as a joint venture between Outer Ring Excavations and Deep Core Mining Inc. as a vessel to help meet the demands of New Eden's industry and provide a flexible platform from which mining operations can be more easily managed.
The Orca uses much of the technology developed by ORE for the Rorqual and integrated with the latest advancements from Deep Core Mining research division has developed a vessel which offers a diverse role to all sizes of operations and needs.
The cargo capacity is designed to accommodate a large volume of different types of cargo and is split between the cargohold (30,000m3 base capacity max expandable to around 90,000m3+), a corp hangar (40,000m3) and ship maintenance bay (400,000 m3), with the release of Apocrypha 1.5 the Orca has also gained a specialised Ore Bay of 50,000 m3. Wich makes the Orca capable of hauling around 180,000 m3.
The benefit of the corporate hangar is that it can be used as a secure location for storing ore because it is accessible by others. For example, when out on mining ops your haulers (if you still need them with the Orca present) can take from here instead of scooping jet cans.
The ship maintenance bay is very useful for moving a few ships out to a new location, either in space or a station, and also has the benefit of allowing your corp or fleet members to either refit in space or arrive in fast ships and switch to a mining barge or other ship. Also this makes moving rigged ships around much easier with it being the first ship capable of using stargates that also has a ship maintenance bay and moves throughout empire.Role Bonus:

Development of the Orca
The Orca's Role
Initial Predictions
Rumors abounded about the Orca and it's intended uses, especially since CCP had not officially mentioned this ship in any of its dev blogs, nor was any information available under either the "in testing" or "in development" sections of the EVE home site.
As such, wild speculation on this ship are to be found in the forums.
Most people agreed it would be a mini-Rorqual, designed to facilitate the use of mining links and hauling in high sec. CCP representatives have also suggested that it will be a bridge between run of the mill industrial ships and full sized Freighters.
Some people believed that it will have a large hold, while others felt it will have access to the same or a similar compression module to the Rorqual. It was generally believed this ship will be sub-capital and will not have a jump drive, nor will it be able to fit mining lasers or strip miners. It was expected it will have bonuses to mining links and tractor beams.
As to its required skills, tanking ability, drone capacity and other concerns, only baseless speculation existed.
Early Summer Developments
The Orca project seems to be headed by CCP Chronotis. He has responded a few times originally stating that CCP is indeed working on an Orca ship for Mining, and that CCP is paying very close attention to the communities speculations as to how the Orca would be used if it had certain capabilities.
More recently, Chronotis has confirmed that Orca is scheduled to be included in the next major content release, which should be around Winter 2008/09. Chronotis also mentioned that the Orca will likely be a hauling vessel, although as of late June the Orca is still well defined enough to release any specific capabilities.
Chronotis also mentioned that the winter expansion would be "a good time for industrialists everywhere."
Quantum Rise
The Orca will be deployed in the new Winter 2008/2009 expansion pack Quantum Rise
- "EVE Online: Quantum Rise Multiplies MMO Power". CCP Offical Press Release. Retrieved on 15-10-2008. “The backbone of EVE's vibrant economy, industrial ships are being rebalanced and optimized to better suit the needs of haulers and industrialists, including the latest edition to the fleet, a massive capital industrial ship dubbed the Orca.”
